Traditional Teaching and Progressive Teaching in Mathematics
We have get knowledge since we were child and we had already learned it indirectly. We began to study it formally started from kindergarten then elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, high school, graduate and maybe until post graduate. Mathematics education has some problems such as how to empower and developed student, and how to change traditional teaching into a progressive teaching. There are few levels on teaching and learning, which are:
1. Material, in this level there are factors which support this level that are class, teaching, book, building and student.
2. Formal, in this level there are factors which support this level that are curriculum, syllabi, and book.
3. Normative, in this level there are factors which support this level that are law, educational system, paradigm of education, and theories of education.
4. Spiritual, in this level there are factors which support this level that are spiritual, teacher vision, good or bad, and ways of life.
Traditional teaching and progressive teaching have big different. In traditional teaching, teaching has a different mean with teaching in progressive teaching. In traditional teaching, teaching means to give, transfer of knowledge directly. Student controlled by teacher and teacher is teaching. It makes student passive and between teacher and students have a passive interaction. In progressive teaching, teaching means develop, construct their own knowledge. Students don’t depend on teacher and teacher is facilitated. It makes students be an active learner and between teacher and students have an active interaction.
In view of traditional teaching, it have different student, but the traditional teaching give same time, same mathematics, same facilities, same objects, and same result. It makes student can construct and develop their own knowledge. But in view of progressive teaching, it has different student, different time, different mathematics, different facilities, different objects, and different result. It makes student can construct, build, and develop their own knowledge.
Traditional teaching has single method that is explain, give example, give rules and give task. The students just do what the teacher said and follow the instruction. So the students are controlled by teacher. But progressive teaching have no method because there is no the best way to educate. Students have variant method that they can create depend on their ability and their knowledge.
Students as younger learner don’t match with pure mathematics but match with school mathematics. Curriculum in traditional teaching is context and purpose but in progressive teaching is student’s competence. Traditional teaching make study as obligate or invest for the students, but progressive teaching make study as need for student. To make student as active learner we must motivate students. Motivation each student, collaboration between students and teacher make it fun to learn together and build every character that they have because every individual is unique and contextual which can learn everywhere as a group or individually.

Be A Good Mathematics Teacher From Ourself
As a student we learn many things and we get many information. However we need to empower ourself and to be better. There are many ways to empower ourself.
- Don’t be hesitate
- We must wake up
- Make sure you in right way to approach our purpose
We need to understand ourself inside and outside. It means we have to know our ability. To be a better people don’t blind and don’t empty. Don’t blind it means we have to know our purpose and knowledge and don’t empty it means we have to means our life.
Besides, we have to transform from the younger student into the older student and aware of our characteristics. As the older student, we don’t depend on our lecture and don’t (terpengaruh) by another.
There are many ways to learn on the side as candidate of mathematics teacher. We can get it from books and our experiences. Further, mathematics problem is the different think between the older student and the younger student. The younger student think mathematics in concrete material from daily and the older student think mathematics in abstract materials (mind object) to look for values.
The older student always think to abstract the object from daily. It means that the older student taking certain properties which they want to learn. The older student think about the abstract materials or mind objects which consider all of the exist properties is perfect.
There is a big different between teach mathematics and learn mathematics. Teach mathematics by teacher and learn mathematics by student. To build mathematics, student must be active to learn mathematics. To be a teacher we need teacher’s preparation like lesson plan and student worksheet. Besides, we need to interaction and we need to guarantee our student to understand what we teach.

Indeep Thinking About Mathematics Education
We learn calculus, algebra, trigonometry, etc in this second
semester of mathematics education continuously. If we learn in the higher
semester of mathematics education program, then we will get the subject of pure
mathematics lessons. Besides the mathematics education program, there is
mathematics program and what is the difference between mathematics education
program and mathematics program?
Mathematics program learn pure mathematics and mathematics
education programs not only learn mathematics but also have the educational
background of mathematics from semester 1 to semester 6.Mathematics education
is for younger student in pre elementary school or kindergarten, elementary
school,junior high school, senior high school and high school of university.
In learn mathematics we should feel happy because if we
happy then we can learn it with high motivation to reach our purpose. As a
student in mathematics education program we will make the student understand
where is their position between the older people and the younger people.
There is difference between older and younger people. The
older people have many experiences than the younger people. So, the younger
people is novice and the older people is experiences.
Psychologically, the difference between older people and
younger people are :
The younger people think mathematics in concrete material
from daily and the older people think mathematics in abstract materials (mind
object)to look for values.
The older people always think to abstract the object from
daily. It means that the older people taking certain properties which they want
to learn.The older people think about the abstract materials or mind objects
wich consider all of the exist properties is perfect.
For example: a line is perfectly straight, which have
no width.
Ability of thinking between the older people and the younger
people is different. The older people have higher ability of thinking than the
younger people.
For example: we have number as shown below

thinking about that number because they have differences in ability of
thinking.
For the younger people, they have ability of thinking that
said if 2 is bigger than 7
For the older people, they have ability of thinking that
said if 2 is always smaller than 7 because the older people don’t think about
the shape but they think about the value.

mathematics:
· Mathematics is the search of patterns and relationships
Gave students the opportunity to conduct discovery and
investigation to determine patterns of relationships.
Provide an opportunity for students to perform experiments
premises in various ways.
Encourage students to discover the sequence, difference,
comparison, grouping, etc.
Encourage students to draw general conclusions.
Help students to understand and find a relationship between
understanding one another.
· Mathematics is investigation activity
Encourage the initiative and provide an opportunity to think
differently.
Encourage the curiosity, the desire to ask, the ability to
refute and ability estimates from students.
Appreciate the unexpected discovery as beneficial rather
than take it as a mistake.
Encourage students to discover the structure and design of
mathematics.
Encourage students to appreciate the discovery of other
students.
Encourage students to think reflexive.
Does not recommend the use of a particular method.
· Mathematics is problem solving activities
Provide an environment that stimulates learning mathmatics
problem.
Help students solve mathematics problem using their own way.
Help students find the information needed to solve
mathematic problems.
Encourage students to think logically, consistently,
systematically and develop a system of documentation / records.
Develop the ability and skills to solve problems.
Helps students learn how and when to use various visual aids
/ media of mathematics education such as: term, calculator, etc.
· Mathematics is a means of communication
Encourage students to recognize the nature of mathematics.
Encourage students to make examples of the nature of
mathematics.
Encourage students to explain the nature of mathematics.
Encourage students to justify the need for mathematics
activities.
Encourage students to discuss mathematics problems.
Encourage students to read and write mathematics.
Respect the student’s mother tongue in talking about
mathematics.
And the character of student learn are

English First Meet
It was Friday and the weather is hot in that afternoon. Because of Mr. Marsigit, our Lecturer, told us to changes the schedule from 7 am to 1 pm for that day. with the weather as hot as that day, I had to go to college for English Lecture at 1 pm. When I and my friends arrived at college, we had entered the wrong room. We remembered that the class schedule at 7 am were in room 105. We entered into room 105 confidently and without advance guilty that we got into the wrong room. Fortunately our friends passed by and told us that the class has been changed to room 209. we felt a bit embarrassed but we considered that the incident was a joke for ourselves. Then we gathered with our friends on the east of musholla. In there I got a news that the room 207 to 209 will be used for an event. Some of my friend and class leader tried to find another room to be used by our class. While waiting we were all joking and story telling.
We were all happy because we hoped there was no lecture that afternoon. But suddenly one of my friends came and told us that our room was replaced in room 303. Our hope was dashed. After that another friends came and told us that the room 303 is already used by another class. But I don’t expect anymore that there will be no English Lecture. Some of my friends are still looking for a room.

After waiting about 1 hour, Finally Mr. Marsigit come and waiting for my friend to find the room. I and my friends had ordered by Mr. Marsigit to find room on the 3rd floor. When we were both going to the third floor, my friend told that he had found the room for our class and we both don’t have to go up to the 3rd floor to find room. Then we go to the room 107. Room 107 was in the old building, quite large but was hot in the room.
The clock shows at 2 pm and before we starting the lecture. Mr. Marsigit asked us to sit around him and then the class begins with prayer. That day is the first meeting of the English Lecture, Mr. Marsigit start introduction about himself, his family and his education. Mr. Marsigit told us some interesting experiences. It is a very interesting introduction with a few jokes that make me and my friends laugh. After Mr. Marsigit introducing himself, he calling student’s names one by one and asking the student to introduce themselves. When the students introduce themselves Mr. Marsigit also gave a lot of jokes. At the end of our Introduction, we discussed the contract of lecture and Mr. Marsigit gave us some advice.
I think that day was memorable. I’m quite interested in English and Mr. Marsigit also gave a good impression at the beginning of the meeting with his advices, jokes and experiences that he has been told. The class that looks lazy at the beginning and hope there’s no English Lecture on that hot day turned into fun. Maybe on the next meetings could be more fun. :D
